Madeira Botanical Gardens

Surrounded by the mountains in the North and the ocean in the south in Funchal amphitheatre, the botanical garden of Madeira is about 3km (1.86 miles) from the city centre. It has 8 hectares in area, 5 of which are gardens where you can admire about 3000 species of plants from several places in the world. 200 of these, being endemic species from macaronesea and some growing exclusively in Madeira. It has a rich collection from different floras containing in total over 15000 specimens. At the end of the Madeira Boticanal garden there is an area devoted to exotic birds with a collection of 300 rare birds.

Palheiro Gardens

Palheiro Golf Club

The palheiro gardens are situated at 500m (1640ft) above sea level. The original owner, the Conde de Carvalhal, planted many trees on the estate and laid the foundation with a camellia collection; some of his early plantings can still be seen today .Since around 1885 the quinta passed into the hands of the Blandy Family. The Palheiro garden is a Mecca for camellia lovers. Visitors may be surprised to see trees such as Oak, Beech, Chestnut and Cedar growing alongside the Eucalyptus, Araucaria pine. The gardens in Palheiro boosts a large variety of proteas.

Monte Palace Tropical Gardens

Monte Palace


This Monte Palace Garden is located about 5 km (3.11 miles)from the centre of Funchal .The gardens occupy an area of 70 000m2 (1.73acres) and has been replanted with exotic flora from different Continents. In the Monte Palace garden there is large area with typical plants from Laurissilva Forest. Spacious lakes full of koi fish can also be founded. The Monte Palace Museum is found here with a collection of contemporary art.

Orchid Garden Madeira

Orchid Gardens

The Madeira Orchid Garden is located 200m (656 ft) below the Botanical Gardens. This orchid garden has more than 50,000 plants. There is a beautiful and genuine exhibition built in a miniature forest, of a wide variety of orchids. Here you will find a bit of everything from flowers to birds to fish. There are plants blooming throughout the year.

Quinta Da Bela Vista

Bela Vista Orchid Garden

The attractive eighteenth century Quinta Bela Vista contains one of Madeira’s most important collection of orchids .The orchid garden of Bela Vista, is a 20-year-old orchid exhibition, featuring many rare species, in a spectacular range of shapes and colours. Below the orchid houses there is a lovely lawned area set out with tables and chairs where tea and coffee are sometimes served.

Madeira Rose Garden

Tour of Rose Garden

his garden is situated in Arco Sao Jorge, at the “Quinta do Arco Rosarium”, 8000m2  (1.98 acres). Here you will find one of the largest rose collections in Portugal. There are more than 1000 different kinds of rosebushes, some very old and some more recent. The most important and rare are identified by their names and species. At the madeira rose garden you can enjoy the beauty, aroma and various colours of roses. On this same quinta, there is a vineyard were you can find a ancient wine press, and a great variety of tropical fruit.

Catarina Park

Catarina Park Funchal

The Park of Holy Catarina is situated in the western zone of Funchal. This municipal park has an amazing sight over Funchal and its bay. It has beautiful flowerbeds and paved roads where you can stroll, observing the countless plant species originating from all of the corners of the World. It has a magnificent pond with fountains and a small Island in the centre where swans and ducks live. Other attractions of this park are the bird nurseries, the sculptures dedicated to diverse individualities and the chapels of holy Catarina.The visitors have at their disposal a bar-esplanade, a playground and a ludoteca, installed in 1997 and 2005 respectively.

Funchal Municipal Gardens

Municipal Park in Funchal

The Municipal Garden, also known as Dona Amélia Garden is on the north side of Avenida Arriaga and covers an area of 8300 m2 (89, 34 ft²). St. Francis Convent once occupied this site and a stone bearing its coat of arms is on show on one of the lawns. The park is full of tropical plants .The garden also has a delightful pond and fountains .In the north of the park there is a good kiosk café. Next to the café kiosk is a concrete amphitheatre that occasionally hosts live concerts.

Suptropical Floriculture Centre

Protea in Madeira Island

The subtropical floriculture centre is located in Lugar de Baixo, Ponta do Sol, on the south coast, at a mean altitude of 40 meters (131ft ).The centre is 2 hectares in area , scattered with several terraces , and is the ideal place to grow and study tropical plants such as, slipperwort, anthurium, cymbidium, sugar loaf, protea ,birds of paradise and much more.
